Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity Morning
Prayer Sunday
1st Lesson Ecclesiasticus (Wisdom of Sirach)
17:1-15
1 The Lord created man of the earth, and turned him into it again. 2
He gave them few days, and a short time, and power also over the things
therein. 3 He endued them with strength by themselves, and made them
according to his image, 4 And put the fear of man upon all flesh, and
gave him dominion over beasts and fowls. 5 They received the use of the
five operations of the Lord, and in the sixth place he imparted them
understanding, and in the seventh speech, an interpreter of the
cogitations thereof.] 6 Counsel, and a tongue, and eyes, ears, and a
heart, gave he them to understand. 7 Withal he filled them with the
knowledge of understanding, and shewed them good and evil. 8 He set his
eye upon their hearts, that he might shew them the greatness of his
works. 9 He gave them to glory in his marvellous acts for ever, that
they might declare his works with understanding. 10 And the elect shall
praise his holy name. 11 Beside this he gave them knowledge, and the law
of life for an heritage. 12 He made an everlasting covenant with them,
and shewed them his judgments. 13 Their eyes saw the majesty of his
glory, and their ears heard his glorious voice. 14 And he said unto
them, Beware of all unrighteousness; and he gave every man commandment
concerning his neighbour. 15 Their ways are ever before him, and shall
not be hid from his eyes.

2nd Lesson Mark 3:20-21, 31-35
20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could
not so much as eat bread. 21 And when his friends heard of it, they went
out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing
without, sent unto him, calling him. 32 And the multitude sat about him,
and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek
for thee. 33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my
brethren? 34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and
said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35 For whosoever shall do the
will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

1st Lesson Habakkuk 1:12. 2:4, 14
12 Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One? we
shall not die. O Lord, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O
mighty God, thou hast established them for correction. 13 Thou art of
purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:
wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest
thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than
he? 14 And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things,
that have no ruler over them? 15 They take up all of them with the
angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag:
therefore they rejoice and are glad. 16 Therefore they sacrifice unto
their net, and burn incense unto their drag; because by them their
portion is fat, and their meat plenteous. 17 Shall they therefore empty
their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?
1 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will
watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am
reproved. 2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and
make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. 3 For the
vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and
not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it
will not tarry. 4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in
him: but the just shall live by his faith.
14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of
the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

2nd Lesson Hebrews 10:35
35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which
hath great recompence of reward. 36 For ye have need of patience, that,
after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. 37 For
yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not
tarry. 38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my
soul shall have no pleasure in him. 39 But we are not of them who draw
back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the
soul.

Lesson Genesis 43:1-5, 11-16, 26-34
1 And the famine was sore in the land. 2 And it
came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out
of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. 3
And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us,
saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 4 If
thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food: 5
But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said
unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it
must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your
vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little
honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds: 12 And take double money in
your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your
sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight: 13
Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man: 14 And God
Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other
brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.
15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their
hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood
before Joseph. 16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the
ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for
these men shall dine with me at noon.
26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him
the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves
to him to the earth. 27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is
your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive? 28 And
they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet
alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. 29 And he
lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and
said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he
said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. 30 And Joseph made haste; for
his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and
he entered into his chamber, and wept there. 31 And he washed his face,
and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. 32 And they
set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the
Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians
might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto
the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to
his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men
marvelled one at another. 34 And he took and sent messes unto them from
before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs.
And they drank, and were merry with him.

Lesson Hebrews 13:1-21
1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Be not
forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained
angels unawares. 3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them;
and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. 4
Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers
and adulterers God will judge. 5 Let your conversation be without
covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath
said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly
say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto
me. 7 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto
you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their
conversation. 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for
ever. 9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it
is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with
meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. 10
We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the
tabernacle. 11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought
into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the
camp. 12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with
his own blood, suffered without the gate. 13 Let us go forth therefore
unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. 14 For here have we no
continuing city, but we seek one to come. 15 By him therefore let us
offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of
our lips giving thanks to his name. 16 But to do good and to communicate
forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. 17 Obey them
that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for
your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with
joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. 18 Pray for
us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to
live honestly. 19 But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be
restored to you the sooner. 20 Now the God of peace, that brought again
from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through
the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good
work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his
sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever.
Amen.

Lesson Deuteronomy 15:7-15
7 If there be among you a poor man of one of thy
brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God
giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from
thy poor brother: 8 But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and
shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.
9 Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The
seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil
against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto
the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee. 10 Thou shalt surely
give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto
him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in
all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. 11 For the
poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee,
saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor,
and to thy needy, in thy land. 12 And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or
an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in
the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee. 13 And when thou
sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty: 14
Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor,
and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the Lord thy God hath
blessed thee thou shalt give unto him. 15 And thou shalt remember that
thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed
thee: therefore I command thee this thing today.

Lesson Matthew 26:6-13
6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of
Simon the leper, 7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box
of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what
purpose is this waste? 9 For this ointment might have been sold for
much, and given to the poor. 10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto
them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon
me. 11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for
my burial. 13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be
preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath
done, be told for a memorial of her.

Lesson Deuteronomy 24:10
10 When thou dost lend thy brother any thing,
thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge. 11 Thou shalt
stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the
pledge abroad unto thee. 12 And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep
with his pledge: 13 In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again
when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless
thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God.
14 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy,
whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land
within thy gates: 15 At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither
shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart
upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto
thee. 16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither
shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be
put to death for his own sin. 17 Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of
the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to
pledge: 18 But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt,
and the Lord thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to
do this thing. 19 When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and
hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it:
it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow:
that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. 20
When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs
again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the
widow. 21 When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not
glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless,
and for the widow. 22 And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman
in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

Lesson Luke 10:23-37
23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and
said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see
those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those
things which ye hear, and have not heard them. 25 And, behold, a certain
lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life? 26 He said unto him, What is written in the law?
how readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy
strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he
said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my
neighbour? 30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from
Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his
raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 And by
chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him,
he passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at
the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he
saw him, he had compassion on him, 34 And went to him, and bound up his
wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and
brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And on the morrow when
he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said
unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I
come again, I will repay thee. 36 Which now of these three, thinkest
thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he
said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do
thou likewise.

Lesson 2 Samuel 18:1, 6-14, 19-33
1 And David numbered the people that were with
him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over
them.
6 So the people went out into the field against
Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim; 7 Where the people of
Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a
great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men. 8 For the battle was
there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured
more people that day than the sword devoured. 9 And Absalom met the
servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under
the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak,
and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that
was under him went away. 10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and
said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak. 11 And Joab said unto the
man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not
smite him there to the ground? And I would have given thee ten shekels
of silver, and a girdle. 12 And the man said unto Joab, Though I should
receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put
forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king
charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the
young man Absalom. 13 Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against
mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou
thyself wouldest have set thyself against me. 14 Then said Joab, I may
not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and
thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the
midst of the oak.
19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me
now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the Lord hath avenged him
of his enemies. 20 And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings
this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou
shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead. 21 Then said Joab
to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself
unto Joab, and ran. 22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to
Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab
said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings
ready? 23 But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run.
Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi. 24 And
David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof
over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and
behold a man running alone. 25 And the watchman cried, and told the
king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth.
And he came apace, and drew near. 26 And the watchman saw another man
running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold
another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
27 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is
like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a
good man, and cometh with good tidings. 28 And Ahimaaz called, and said
unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face
before the king, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, which hath
delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
29 And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz
answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a
great tumult, but I knew not what it was. 30 And the king said unto him,
Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still. 31
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for
the Lord hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against
thee. 32 And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe?
And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise
against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. 33 And the king
was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and
as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom!
would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Lesson Acts 16:16-34
16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a
certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which
brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17 The same followed Paul
and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high
God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. 18 And this did she many
days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command
thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the
same hour. 19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was
gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace
unto the rulers, 20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These
men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21 And teach customs,
which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being
Romans. 22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the
magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. 23 And
when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison,
charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24 Who, having received such a
charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in
the stocks. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises
unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 And suddenly there was a
great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and
immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were
loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and
seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have
killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28 But Paul
cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all
here. 29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling,
and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 And brought them out, and said,
Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord
Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake
unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And
he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and
was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 And when he had brought
them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in
God with all his house.

Lesson 2 Samuel 12:1-10, 13-15a
1 And the Lord sent Nathan unto David. And he
came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the
one rich, and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks
and herds: 3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb,
which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him,
and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own
cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. 4 And there
came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own
flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come
unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that
was come to him. 5 And David's anger was greatly kindled against the
man; and he said to Nathan, As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done
this thing shall surely die: 6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold,
because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. 7 And Nathan said
to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I
anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of
Saul; 8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into
thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that
had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such
things. 9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to
do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword,
and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the
sword of the children of Ammon. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never
depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken
the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned
against the Lord. And Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put
away thy sin; thou shalt not die. 14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou
hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the
child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. 15 And Nathan
departed unto his house. And the Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife
bare unto David, and it was very sick.

Lesson 2 Corinthians 1
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will
of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at
Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: 2 Grace be to you
and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed
be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies,
and the God of all comfort; 4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation,
that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the
comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 5 For as the
sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by
Christ. 6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and
salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings
which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your
consolation and salvation. 7 And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing,
that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the
consolation. 8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our
trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure,
above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9 But we had
the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in
ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: 10 Who delivered us from
so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet
deliver us; 11 Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the
gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given
by many on our behalf. 12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of
our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly
wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the
world, and more abundantly to you-ward. 13 For we write none other
things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall
acknowledge even to the end; 14 As also ye have acknowledged us in part,
that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the
Lord Jesus. 15 And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you
before, that ye might have a second benefit; 16 And to pass by you into
Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be
brought on my way toward Judaea. 17 When I therefore was thus minded,
did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose
according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay
nay? 18 But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay. 19
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even
by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was
yea. 20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen,
unto the glory of God by us. 21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in
Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 22 Who hath also sealed us, and
given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. 23 Moreover I call God
for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto
Corinth. 24 Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are
helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

Lesson Ecclesiasticus
(Wisdom of Sirach) 3:17
1 Hear me your father, O children, and do
thereafter, that ye may be safe. 2 For the Lord hath given the father
honour over the children, and hath confirmed the authority of the mother
over the sons. 3 Whoso honoureth his father maketh an atonement for his
sins: 4 And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up
treasure. 5 Whoso honoureth his father shall have joy of his own
children; and when he maketh his prayer, he shall be heard. 6 He that
honoureth his father shall have a long life; and he that is obedient
unto the Lord shall be a comfort to his mother. 7 He that feareth the
Lord will honour his father, and will do service unto his parents, as to
his masters. 8 Honour thy father and mother both in word and deed, that
a blessing may come upon thee from them. 9 For the blessing of the
father establisheth the houses of children; but the curse of the mother
rooteth out foundations. 10 Glory not in the dishonour of thy father;
for thy father's dishonour is no glory unto thee. 11 For the glory of a
man is from the honour of his father; and a mother in dishonour is a
reproach to the children. 12 My son, help thy father in his age, and
grieve him not as long as he liveth. 13 And if his understanding fail,
have patience with him; and despise him not when thou art in thy full
strength. 14 For the relieving of thy father shall not be forgotten: and
instead of sins it shall be added to build thee up. 15 In the day of
thine affliction it shall be remembered; thy sins also shall melt away,
as the ice in the fair warm weather. 16 He that forsaketh his father is
as a blasphemer; and he that angereth his mother is cursed: of God. 17
My son, go on with thy business in meekness; so shalt thou be beloved of
him that is approved.

Lesson Matthew 1:18
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this
wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came
together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her
husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick
example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on
these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a
dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee
Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS:
for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done,
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet,
saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a
son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is,
God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of
the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not
till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name
JESUS.

Lesson 2 Samuel 12:15b-23
15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the
Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very
sick. 16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted,
and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. 17 And the elders of his
house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he
would not, neither did he eat bread with them. 18 And it came to pass on
the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared
to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the
child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto
our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child
is dead? 19 But when David saw that his servants whispered, David
perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his
servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead. 20 Then David
arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his
apparel, and came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped: then he
came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him,
and he did eat. 21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this
that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it
was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I
said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child
may live? 23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring
him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

Lesson 2 Corinthians 2
1 But I determined this with myself, that I
would not come again to you in heaviness. 2 For if I make you sorry, who
is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have
sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you
all, that my joy is the joy of you all. 4 For out of much affliction and
anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be
grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly
unto you. 5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in
part: that I may not overcharge you all. 6 Sufficient to such a man is
this punishment, which was inflicted of many. 7 So that contrariwise ye
ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one
should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 8 Wherefore I beseech you
that ye would confirm your love toward him. 9 For to this end also did I
write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all
things. 10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I
forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in
the person of Christ; 11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for
we are not ignorant of his devices. 12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas
to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord, 13
I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but
taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia. 14 Now
thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and
maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. 15 For
we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in
them that perish: 16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death;
and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for
these things? 17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God:
but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in
Christ.

Lesson Ecclesiasticus
(Wisdom of Sirach). 4:1-18
1 My son, defraud not the poor of his living,
and make not the needy eyes to wait long. 2 Make not an hungry soul
sorrowful; neither provoke a man in his distress. 3 Add not more trouble
to an heart that is vexed; and defer not to give to him that is in need.
4 Reject not the supplication of the afflicted; neither turn away thy
face from a poor man. 5 Turn not away thine eye from the needy, and give
him none occasion to curse thee: 6 For if he curse thee in the
bitterness of his soul, his prayer shall be heard of him that made him.
7 Get thyself the love of the congregation, and bow thy head to a great
man. 8 Let it not grieve thee to bow down thine ear to the poor, and
give him a friendly answer with meekness. 9 Deliver him that suffereth
wrong from the hand of the oppressor; and be not fainthearted when thou
sittest in judgment. 10 Be as a father unto the fatherless, and instead
of an husband unto their mother: so shalt thou be as the son of the most
High, and he shall love thee more than thy mother doth. 11 Wisdom
exalteth her children, and layeth hold of them that seek her. 12 He that
loveth her loveth life; and they that seek to her early shall be filled
with joy. 13 He that holdeth her fast shall inherit glory; and
wheresoever she entereth, the Lord will bless. 14 They that serve her
shall minister to the Holy One: and them that love her the Lord doth
love. 15 Whoso giveth ear unto her shall judge the nations: and he that
attendeth unto her shall dwell securely. 16 If a man commit himself unto
her, he shall inherit her; and his generation shall hold her in
possession. 17 For at the first she will walk with him by crooked ways,
and bring fear and dread upon him, and torment him with her discipline,
until she may trust his soul, and try him by her laws. 18 Then will she
return the straight way unto him, and comfort him, and shew him her
secrets.

Lesson Matthew 2:1-12
1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea
in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east
to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for
we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 When
Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all
Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and
scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should
be born. 5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it
is written by the prophet, 6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda,
art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come
a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7 Then Herod, when he had
privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the
star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search
diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me
word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9 When they had heard
the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east,
went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11
And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with
Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had
opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and
frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they
should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another
way.

Lesson 2 Samuel 15:1-12
1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom
prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2 And
Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was
so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for
judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou?
And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 3 And
Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is
no man deputed of the king to hear thee. 4 Absalom said moreover, Oh
that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit
or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice! 5 And it was
so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth
his hand, and took him, and kissed him. 6 And on this manner did Absalom
to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the
hearts of the men of Israel. 7 And it came to pass after forty years,
that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow,
which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron. 8 For thy servant vowed a
vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me
again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord. 9 And the king
said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron. 10 But
Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon
as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth
in Hebron. 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem,
that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not
any thing. 12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's
counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices.
And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with
Absalom.

Lesson 2 Corinthians 3
1 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or
need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of
commendation from you? 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known
and read of all men: 3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the
epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the
Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables
of the heart. 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: 5 Not
that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves;
but our sufficiency is of God; 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of
the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter
killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 7 But if the ministration of death,
written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of
Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of
his countenance; which glory was to be done away: 8 How shall not the
ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? 9 For if the ministration
of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of
righteousness exceed in glory. 10 For even that which was made glorious
had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth. 11
For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which
remaineth is glorious. 12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use
great plainness of speech: 13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over
his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the
end of that which is abolished: 14 But their minds were blinded: for
until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of
the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 15 But even unto
this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. 16
Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken
away. 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord
is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a
glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory
to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Lesson Ecclesiasticus
(Wisdom of Sirach). 4:20. 5:7
20 Observe the opportunity, and beware of evil;
and be not ashamed when it concerneth thy soul. 21 For there is a shame
that bringeth sin; and there is a shame which is glory and grace. 22
Accept no person against thy soul, and let not the reverence of any man
cause thee to fall. 23 And refrain not to speak, when there is occasion
to do good, and hide not thy wisdom in her beauty. 24 For by speech
wisdom shall be known: and learning by the word of the tongue. 25 In no
wise speak against the truth; but be abashed of the error of thine
ignorance. 26 Be not ashamed to confess thy sins; and force not the
course of the river. 27 Make not thyself an underling to a foolish man;
neither accept the person of the mighty. 28 Strive for the truth unto
death, and the Lord shall fight for thee. 29 Be not hasty in thy tongue,
and in thy deeds slack and remiss. 30 Be not as a lion in thy house, nor
frantick among thy servants. 31 Let not thine hand be stretched out to
receive, and shut when thou shouldest repay.
1 Set thy heart upon thy goods; and say not, I
have enough for my life. 2 Follow not thine own mind and thy strength,
to walk in the ways of thy heart: 3 And say not, Who shall controul me
for my works? for the Lord will surely revenge thy pride. 4 Say not, I
have sinned, and what harm hath happened unto me? for the Lord is
longsuffering, he will in no wise let thee go. 5 Concerning
propitiation, be not without fear to add sin unto sin: 6 And say not His
mercy is great; he will be pacified for the multitude of my sins: for
mercy and wrath come from him, and his indignation resteth upon sinners.
7 Make no tarrying to turn to the Lord, and put not off from day to day:
for suddenly shall the wrath of the Lord come forth, and in thy security
thou shalt be destroyed, and perish in the day of vengeance.

Lesson Matthew 2:13
13 And when they were departed, behold, the
angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and
take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou
there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to
destroy him. 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by
night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of
Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the
prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. 16 Then Herod, when
he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent
forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the
coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time
which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled
that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was
there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because
they are not. 19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord
appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 Saying, Arise, and take the
young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are
dead which sought the young child's life. 21 And he arose, and took the
young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But
when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his
father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned
of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: 23 And he
came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

Lesson 2 Samuel 15:13-29
13 And there came a messenger to David, saying,
The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. 14 And David said
unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us
flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart,
lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city
with the edge of the sword. 15 And the king's servants said unto the
king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king
shall appoint. 16 And the king went forth, and all his household after
him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the
house. 17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and
tarried in a place that was far off. 18 And all his servants passed on
beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the
Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on
before the king. 19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore
goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king:
for thou art a stranger, and also an exile. 20 Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I
go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and
truth be with thee. 21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the
Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my
lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will
thy servant be. 22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai
the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that
were with him. 23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all
the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook
Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the
wilderness. 24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him,
bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of
God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of
the city. 25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God
into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will
bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation: 26 But if he
thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me
as seemeth good unto him. 27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest,
Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons
with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28 See, I
will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from
you to certify me. 29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of
God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.

Lesson 2 Corinthians 4
1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we
have received mercy, we faint not; 2 But have renounced the hidden
things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word
of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending
ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 3 But if our
gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of
this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the
light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should
shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the
Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who
commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts,
to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the
excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 8 We are troubled
on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always
bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life
also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. 11 For we which live
are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of
Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death
worketh in us, but life in you. 13 We having the same spirit of faith,
according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we
also believe, and therefore speak; 14 Knowing that he which raised up
the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us
with you. 15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace
might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. 16
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the
inward man is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is
but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight
of glory; 18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the
things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal;
but the things which are not seen are eternal.

11 Say not thou, It is through the Lord that I
fell away: for thou oughtest not to do the things that he hateth. 12 Say
not thou, He hath caused me to err: for he hath no need of the sinful
man. 13 The Lord hateth all abomination; and they that fear God love it
not. 14 He himself made man from the beginning, and left him in the hand
of his counsel; 15 If thou wilt, to keep the commandments, and to
perform acceptable faithfulness. 16 He hath set fire and water before
thee: stretch forth thy hand unto whether thou wilt. 17 Before man is
life and death; and whether him liketh shall be given him. 18 For the
wisdom of the Lord is great, and he is mighty in power, and beholdeth
all things: 19 And his eyes are upon them that fear him, and he knoweth
every work of man. 20 He hath commanded no man to do wickedly, neither
hath he given any man licence to sin.

Lesson Matthew 3
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching
in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet
Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye
the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 And the same John had
his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and
his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem,
and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 And were
baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many
of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O
generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to
come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: 9 And think
not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say
unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto
Abraham. 10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees:
therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down,
and cast into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes
I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and
with fire: 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his
floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the
chaff with unquenchable fire. 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to
Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying,
I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus
answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us
to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus, when he
was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens
were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a
dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This
is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

30 And David went up by the ascent of mount
Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went
barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his
head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. 31 And one told David,
saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David
said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into
foolishness. 32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top
of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came
to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head: 33 Unto whom
David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto
me: 34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be
thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so
will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the
counsel of Ahithophel. 35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and
Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou
shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and
Abiathar the priests. 36 Behold, they have there with them their two
sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye
shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear. 37 So Hushai David's
friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
1 And when David was a little past the top of
the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a
couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and
an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a
bottle of wine. 2 And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by
these? And Ziba said, The asses be for the king's household to ride on;
and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine,
that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink. 3 And the king said,
And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he
abideth at Jerusalem: for he said, Today shall the house of Israel
restore me the kingdom of my father. 4 Then said the king to Ziba,
Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I
humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O
king.

Lesson 2 Corinthians 5:1-10
1 For we know that if our earthly house of this
tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made
with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly
desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 If so
be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For we that are in
this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be
unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of
life. 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who
also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6 Therefore we are
always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we
are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We
are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and
to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether
present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10 For we must all appear
before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the
things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be
good or bad.

Lesson Ecclesiasticus
(Wisdom of Sirach). 16:17
17 Say not thou, I will hide myself from the
Lord: shall any remember me from above? I shall not be remembered among
so many people: for what is my soul among such an infinite number of
creatures? 18 Behold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the deep,
and the earth, and all that therein is, shall be moved when he shall
visit. 19 The mountains also and foundations of the earth be shaken with
trembling, when the Lord looketh upon them. 20 No heart can think upon
these things worthily: and who is able to conceive his ways? 21 It is a
tempest which no man can see: for the most part of his works are hid. 22
Who can declare the works of his justice? or who can endure them? for
his covenant is afar off, and the trial of all things is in the end. 23
He that wanteth understanding will think upon vain things: and a foolish
man erring imagineth follies. 24 by son, hearken unto me, and learn
knowledge, and mark my words with thy heart. 25 I will shew forth
doctrine in weight, and declare his knowledge exactly. 26 The works of
the Lord are done in judgment from the beginning: and from the time he
made them he disposed the parts thereof. 27 He garnished his works for
ever, and in his hand are the chief of them unto all generations: they
neither labour, nor are weary, nor cease from their works. 28 None of
them hindereth another, and they shall never disobey his word. 29 After
this the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings.
30 With all manner of living things hath he covered the face thereof;
and they shall return into it again.

Lesson Matthew 4:1-11
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the
wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty
days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the
tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that
these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written,
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city,
and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If
thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall
give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall
bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord
thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high
mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory
of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if
thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get
thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy
God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and,
behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Lesson 2 Samuel 16:5-19
5 And when king David came to Bahurim, behold,
thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was
Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came. 6
And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and
all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his
left. 7 And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou
bloody man, and thou man of Belial: 8 The Lord hath returned upon thee
all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned;
and the Lord hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy
son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a
bloody man. 9 Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why
should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray
thee, and take off his head. 10 And the king said, What have I to do
with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the Lord hath
said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done
so? 11 And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my
son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now
may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the Lord
hath bidden him. 12 It may be that the Lord will look on mine
affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this
day. 13 And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on
the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw
stones at him, and cast dust. 14 And the king, and all the people that
were with him, came weary, and refreshed themselves there. 15 And
Absalom, and all the people the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and
Ahithophel with him. 16 And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite,
David's friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom,
God save the king, God save the king. 17 And Absalom said to Hushai, Is
this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?
18 And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom the Lord, and this
people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him
will I abide. 19 And again, whom should I serve? should I not serve in
the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father's presence, so
will I be in thy presence.

Lesson 2 Corinthians 5:11
11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we
persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are
made manifest in your consciences. 12 For we commend not ourselves again
unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have
somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart. 13
For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be
sober, it is for your cause. 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us;
because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15
And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth
live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we
have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no
more. 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all
things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 To wit, that God
was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their
trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of
reconciliation. 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God
did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled
to God. 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that
we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Lesson Ecclesiasticus
(Wisdom of Sirach). 19:4-18
4 He that is hasty to give credit is
lightminded; and he that sinneth shall offend against his own soul. 5
Whoso taketh pleasure in wickedness shall be condemned: but he that
resisteth pleasures crowneth his life. 6 He that can rule his tongue
shall live without strife; and he that hateth babbling shall have less
evil. 7 Rehearse not unto another that which is told unto thee, and thou
shalt fare never the worse. 8 Whether it be to friend or foe, talk not
of other men's lives; and if thou canst without offence, reveal them
not. 9 For he heard and observed thee, and when time cometh he will hate
thee. 10 If thou hast heard a word, let it die with thee; and be bold,
it will not burst thee. 11 A fool travaileth with a word, as a woman in
labour of a child. 12 As an arrow that sticketh in a man's thigh, so is
a word within a fool's belly. 13 Admonish a friend, it may be he hath
not done it: and if he have done it, that he do it no more. 14 Admonish
thy friend, it may be he hath not said it: and if he have, that he speak
it not again. 15 Admonish a friend: for many times it is a slander, and
believe not every tale. 16 There is one that slippeth in his speech, but
not from his heart; and who is he that hath not offended with his
tongue? 17 Admonish thy neighbour before thou threaten him; and not
being angry, give place to the law of the most High. 18 The fear of the
Lord is the first step to be accepted [of him,] and wisdom obtaineth his
love.

Lesson Matthew 4:12
12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast
into prison, he departed into Galilee; 13 And leaving Nazareth, he came
and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of
Zabulon and Nephthalim: 14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by Esaias the prophet, saying, 15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of
Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the
Gentiles; 16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to
them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. 17
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand. 18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of
Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother,
casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. 19 And he saith unto
them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 And they
straightway left their nets, and followed him. 21 And going on from
thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John
his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets;
and he called them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their
father, and followed him. 23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching
in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and
healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the
people. 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto
him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments,
and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were
lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. 25 And there
followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from
Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond
Jordan.
