1st Lesson Hosea 14
1 O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by
thine iniquity. 2 Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto
him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we
render the calves of our lips. 3 Asshur shall not save us; we will not
ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands,
Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. 4 I will heal
their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned
away from him. 5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the
lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. 6 His branches shall spread,
and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. 7
They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the
corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of
Lebanon. 8 Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I
have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is
thy fruit found. 9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things?
prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the Lord are right, and
the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall
therein.

2nd Lesson Romans 6:12-18
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should
obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as
instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God,
as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments
of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you:
for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we
sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his
servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of
obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the
servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine
which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the
servants of righteousness.

1st Lesson Ecclesiasticus (Wisdom of
Sirach) 6:5-17
5 Sweet language will multiply friends: and a fairspeaking tongue
will increase kind greetings. 6 Be in peace with many: nevertheless have
but one counsellor of a thousand. 7 If thou wouldest get a friend, prove
him first and be not hasty to credit him. 8 For some man is a friend for
his own occasion, and will not abide in the day of thy trouble. 9 And
there is a friend, who being turned to enmity, and strife will discover
thy reproach. 10 Again, some friend is a companion at the table, and
will not continue in the day of thy affliction. 11 But in thy prosperity
he will be as thyself, and will be bold over thy servants. 12 If thou be
brought low, he will be against thee, and will hide himself from thy
face. 13 Separate thyself from thine enemies, and take heed of thy
friends. 14 A faithfu1l friend is a strong defence: and he that hath
found such an one hath found a treasure. 15 Nothing doth countervail a
faithful friend, and his excellency is invaluable. 16 A faithful friend
is the medicine of life; and they that fear the Lord shall find him. 17
Whoso feareth the Lord shall direct his friendship aright: for as he is,
so shall his neighbour be also.

2nd Lesson John 15:12
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved
you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life
for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command
you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not
what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that
I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. 16 Ye have not
chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go
and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that
whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. 17
These things I command you, that ye love one another. 18 If the world
hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of
the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the
world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world
hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is
not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also
persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake,
because they know not him that sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken
unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their
sin. 23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also. 24 If I had not done
among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but
now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But this
cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in
their law, They hated me without a cause. 26 But when the Comforter is
come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of
truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27 And
ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the
beginning.

1st Lesson Genesis 22:1-18
1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham,
and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he
said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get
thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering
upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. 3 And Abraham rose
up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young
men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt
offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told
him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the
place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here
with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come
again to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and
laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a
knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spake unto
Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son.
And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a
burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a
lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. 9 And
they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an
altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and
laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his
hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the Lord
called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said,
Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do
thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing
thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. 13 And Abraham
lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a
thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him
up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called
the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the
mount of the Lord it shall be seen. 15 And the angel of the Lord called
unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, 16 And said, By myself have
I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast
not withheld thy son, thine only son: 17 That in blessing I will bless
thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the
heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall
possess the gate of his enemies; 18 And in thy seed shall all the
nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Lesson Hebrews 6
1 Therefore leaving the principles of the
doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the
foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of
the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection
of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God
permit. 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and
have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy
Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the
world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto
repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and
put him to an open shame. 7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain
that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom
it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: 8 But that which beareth
thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to
be burned. 9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and
things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10 For God is not
unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed
toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do
minister. 11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same
diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: 12 That ye be not
slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit
the promises. 13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could
swear by no greater, he sware by himself, 14 Saying, Surely blessing I
will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. 15 And so, after
he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men verily
swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of
all strife. 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the
heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an
oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for
God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge
to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an
anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that
within the veil; 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even
Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Lesson Daniel 5:1-9, 13-30
1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a
thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. 2 Belshazzar,
whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver
vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple
which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and
his concubines, might drink therein. 3 Then they brought the golden
vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was
at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his
concubines, drank in them. 4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of
gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. 5 In the
same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the
candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the
king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king's countenance
was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his
loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another. 7 The king
cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the
soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon,
Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation
thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about
his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. 8 Then came in
all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make
known to the king the interpretation thereof. 9 Then was king Belshazzar
greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords
were astonied.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king.
And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art
of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father
brought out of Jewry? 14 I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of
the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent
wisdom is found in thee. 15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, have
been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make
known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the
interpretation of the thing: 16 And I have heard of thee, that thou
canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read
the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt
be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and
shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom. 17 Then Daniel answered and
said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards
to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to
him the interpretation. 18 O thou king, the most high God gave
Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:
19 And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and
languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and
whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he
would he put down. 20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind
hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took
his glory from him: 21 And he was driven from the sons of men; and his
heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild
asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the
dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom
of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will. 22 And thou
his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest
all this; 23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and
they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and
thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and
thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood,
and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand
thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: 24
Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was
written. 25 And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL,
UPHARSIN. 26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath
numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. 27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the
balances, and art found wanting. 28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and
given to the Medes and Persians. 29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they
clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and
made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in
the kingdom. 30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans
slain.

Lesson Romans 1:17-21, 28-32
17 For therein is the righteousness of God
revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by
faith. 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all
ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in
unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest
in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things
of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood
by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that
they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they
glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in
their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God
in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those
things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all
unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness;
full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of
evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding,
covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are
worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do
them.

14 Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of
thine heritage, which dwell solitarily in the wood, in the midst of
Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old. 15
According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I shew
unto him marvellous things. 16 The nations shall see and be confounded
at all their might: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their
ears shall be deaf. 17 They shall lick the dust like a serpent, they
shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be
afraid of the Lord our God, and shall fear because of thee. 18 Who is a
God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the
transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger
for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. 19 He will turn again, he will
have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt
cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. 20 Thou wilt perform the
truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our
fathers from the days of old.

Lesson Mark 8:1-21
1 In those days the multitude being very great,
and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and
saith unto them, 2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have
now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: 3 And if I send
them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for
divers of them came from far. 4 And his disciples answered him, From
whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? 5
And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. 6 And
he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven
loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set
before them; and they did set them before the people. 7 And they had a
few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before
them. 8 So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken
meat that was left seven baskets. 9 And they that had eaten were about
four thousand: and he sent them away. 10 And straightway he entered into
a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. 11 And
the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him
a sign from heaven, tempting him. 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit,
and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto
you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. 13 And he left
them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side. 14
Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the
ship with them more than one loaf. 15 And he charged them, saying, Take
heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no
bread. 17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye,
because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have
ye your heart yet hardened? 18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears,
hear ye not? and do ye not remember? 19 When I brake the five loaves
among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They
say unto him, Twelve. 20 And when the seven among four thousand, how
many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. 21 And
he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

Lesson 1 Samuel 17:1-11, 32, 40-50
1 Now the Philistines gathered together their
armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth
to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. 2 And
Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the
valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. 3
And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel
stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between
them. 4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the
Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a
span. 5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed
with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand
shekels of brass. 6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a
target of brass between his shoulders. 7 And the staff of his spear was
like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels
of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him. 8 And he stood and
cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out
to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to
Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. 9 If he be
able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants:
but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our
servants, and serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of
Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. 11 When Saul
and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed,
and greatly afraid.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart
fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this
Philistine.
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose
him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's
bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he
drew near to the Philistine. 41 And the Philistine came on and drew near
unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. 42 And
when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for
he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 43 And the
Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with
staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the
Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the
fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 45 Then said David to
the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and
with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the
God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the
Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine
head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the
Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts
of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword
and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our
hands. 48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and
drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to
meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took
thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead,
that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the
earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a
stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in
the hand of David.

Lesson Acts 11:19
19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the
persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and
Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were
come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21
And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and
turned unto the Lord. 22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears
of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that
he should go as far as Antioch. 23 Who, when he came, and had seen the
grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of
heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, and
full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the
Lord. 25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26 And when
he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that
a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much
people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. 27
And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. 28 And
there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit
that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came
to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. 29 Then the disciples, every man
according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren
which dwelt in Judaea: 30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders
by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Lesson I Samuel 8:4
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered
themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said unto him,
Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a
king to judge us like all the nations. 6 But the thing displeased
Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed
unto the Lord. 7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice
of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected
thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 8
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I
brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have
forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. 9 Now
therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto
them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked
of him a king. 11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that
shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for
himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run
before his chariots. 12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands,
and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to
reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of
his chariots. 13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries,
and to be cooks, and to be bakers. 14 And he will take your fields, and
your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give
them to his servants. 15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of
your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. 16 And he
will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest
young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the
tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. 18 And ye shall cry
out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and
the Lord will not hear you in that day. 19 Nevertheless the people
refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will
have a king over us; 20 That we also may be like all the nations; and
that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them
in the ears of the Lord. 22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto
their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of
Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

Lesson St. Luke 13:1-9
1 There were present at that season some that
told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their
sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these
Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered
such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all
likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam
fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that
dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall
all likewise perish. 6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a
fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon,
and found none. 7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold,
these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none:
cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8 And he answering said unto
him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and
dung it: 9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou
shalt cut it down.

Lesson Daniel 4:4-5, 10-18
4 I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house,
and flourishing in my palace: 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and
the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.
10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed;
I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height
thereof was great. 11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height
thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the
earth: 12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and
in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and
the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was
fed of it. 13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold,
a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; 14 He cried aloud, and
said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his
leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it,
and the fowls from his branches: 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his
roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender
grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let
his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: 16 Let his
heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him;
and let seven times pass over him. 17 This matter is by the decree of
the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent
that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of
men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the
basest of men. 18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou,
O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the
wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the
interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in
thee.

Lesson Acts 22:30—23:11
30 On the morrow, because he would have known
the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from
his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to
appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
1 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council,
said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God
until this day. 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood
by him to smite him on the mouth. 3 Then said Paul unto him, God shall
smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the
law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? 4 And they
that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest? 5 Then said Paul, I
wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou
shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people. 6 But when Paul
perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he
cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of
a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in
question. 7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between
the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided. 8 For
the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor
spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. 9 And there arose a great cry:
and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove,
saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath
spoken to him, let us not fight against God. 10 And when there arose a
great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been
pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take
him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle. 11 And
the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer,
Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear
witness also at Rome.

Lesson I Samuel 9:1-10
1 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name
was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the
son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power. 2 And he had a son,
whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not
among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his
shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. 3 And the
asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son,
Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses. 4
And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of
Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of
Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the
Benjamites, but they found them not. 5 And when they were come to the
land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let
us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought
for us. 6 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man
of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to
pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we
should go. 7 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what
shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there
is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we? 8 And the
servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the
fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God,
to tell us our way. 9 (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire
of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is
now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.) 10 Then said Saul to
his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city
where the man of God was.

Lesson Luke 13:10-21
10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues
on the sabbath. 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of
infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise
lift up herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and
said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he
laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and
glorified God. 14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with
indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said
unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them
therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. 15 The Lord
then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on
the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to
watering? 16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom
Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on
the sabbath day? 17 And when he had said these things, all his
adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the
glorious things that were done by him. 18 Then said he, Unto what is the
kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? 19 It is like a
grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and
it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the
branches of it. 20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the
kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in
three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

Lesson Daniel 4:19-27
19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was
astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake,
and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation
thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the
dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine
enemies. 20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose
height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;
21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was
meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose
branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation: 22 It is thou, O
king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and
reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. 23 And
whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven,
and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of
the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in
the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven,
and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times
pass over him; 24 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the
decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king: 25 That
they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the
beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and
they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass
over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of
men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 26 And whereas they commanded
to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto
thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule. 27
Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off
thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the
poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

Lesson Acts 23:12-24
12 And when it was day, certain of the Jews
banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they
would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. 13 And they were
more than forty which had made this conspiracy. 14 And they came to the
chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a
great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul. 15 Now
therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring
him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would inquire something more
perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to
kill him. 16 And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait,
he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul. 17 Then Paul called
one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the
chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him. 18 So he took
him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner
called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who
hath something to say unto thee. 19 Then the chief captain took him by
the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that
thou hast to tell me? 20 And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire
thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as
though they would inquire somewhat of him more perfectly. 21 But do not
thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than
forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will
neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready,
looking for a promise from thee. 22 So the chief captain then let the
young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast
shewed these things to me. 23 And he called unto him two centurions,
saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen
threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the
night; 24 And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring
him safe unto Felix the governor.

Lesson I Samuel 9:11-21
11 And as they went up the hill to the city,
they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is
the seer here? 12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is
before you: make haste now, for he came today to the city; for there is
a sacrifice of the people today in the high place: 13 As soon as ye be
come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to
the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come,
because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
14 And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the
city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high
place. 15 Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul
came, saying, 16 Tomorrow about this time I will send thee a man out of
the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my
people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the
Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come
unto me. 17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said unto him, Behold the
man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people. 18
Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray
thee, where the seer's house is. 19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said,
I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat
with me today, and tomorrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all
that is in thine heart. 20 And as for thine asses that were lost three
days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is
all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's
house? 21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the
smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the
families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to
me?

Lesson Luke 13:22
22 And he went through the cities and villages,
teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 Then said one unto him,
Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, 24 Strive to
enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to
enter in, and shall not be able. 25 When once the master of the house is
risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and
to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall
answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: 26 Then shall ye
begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast
taught in our streets. 27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not
whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. 28 There
shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and
Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you
yourselves thrust out. 29 And they shall come from the east, and from
the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in
the kingdom of God. 30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first,
and there are first which shall be last. 31 The same day there came
certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart
hence: for Herod will kill thee. 32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and
tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to
morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. 33 Nevertheless I must
walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that
a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. 34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which
killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how
often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather
her brood under her wings, and ye would not! 35 Behold, your house is
left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me,
until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the
name of the Lord.

Lesson Daniel 4:28
28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.
29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of
Babylon. 30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I
have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and
for the honour of my majesty? 31 While the word was in the king's mouth,
there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee
it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. 32 And they shall drive
thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field:
they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass
over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of
men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 33 The same hour was the thing
fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat
grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his
hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.
34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto
heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most
High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose
dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation
to generation: 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as
nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and
among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say
unto him, What doest thou? 36 At the same time my reason returned unto
me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned
unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was
established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 37
Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all
whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in
pride he is able to abase.

Lesson Acts 23:25—24:9
25 And he wrote a letter after this manner: 26
Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.
27 This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them:
then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was
a Roman. 28 And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused
him, I brought him forth into their council: 29 Whom I perceived to be
accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his
charge worthy of death or of bonds. 30 And when it was told me how that
the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave
commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had
against him. Farewell. 31 Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them,
took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris. 32 On the morrow they
left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle: 33 Who,
when they came to Caesarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor,
presented Paul also before him. 34 And when the governor had read the
letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he
was of Cilicia; 35 I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are
also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
1 And after five days Ananias the high priest
descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus,
who informed the governor against Paul. 2 And when he was called forth,
Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy
great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by
thy providence, 3 We accept it always, and in all places, most noble
Felix, with all thankfulness. 4 Notwithstanding, that I be not further
tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy
clemency a few words. 5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow,
and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a
ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: 6 Who also hath gone about to
profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our
law. 7 But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great
violence took him away out of our hands, 8 Commanding his accusers to
come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of
all these things, whereof we accuse him. 9 And the Jews also assented,
saying that these things were so.

Lesson I Samuel 9:22
22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and
brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place
among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons. 23 And
Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which
I said unto thee, Set it by thee.24 And the cook took up the shoulder,
and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said,
Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this
time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people.
So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.25 And when they were come down
from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the
top of the house. 26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the
spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house,
saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out
both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. 27 And as they were going down to
the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before
us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew

Lesson Luke 14:1-14
1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house
of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they
watched him.2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had
the dropsy.3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees,
saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? 4 And they held their
peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; 5 And answered
them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit,
and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? 6 And they
could not answer him again to these things. 7 And he put forth a parable
to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief
rooms; saying unto them, 8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding,
sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou
be bidden of him; 9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee,
Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that
when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up
higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at
meat with thee.11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he
that humbleth himself shall be exalted.12 Then said he also to him that
bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends,
nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest
they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.13 But when thou
makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 And
thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt
be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

Lesson Daniel 5:1-9

Lesson Acts 24:10-23
10 Then Paul, after that the governor had
beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast
been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully
answer for myself: 11 Because that thou mayest understand, that there
are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship. 12
And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither
raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: 13
Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me. 14 But
this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so
worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written
in the law and in the prophets: 15 And have hope toward God, which they
themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead,
both of the just and unjust. 16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have
always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men. 17 Now
after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings. 18
Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple,
neither with multitude, nor with tumult. 19 Who ought to have been here
before thee, and object, if they had ought against me. 20 Or else let
these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I
stood before the council, 21 Except it be for this one voice, that I
cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am
called in question by you this day. 22 And when Felix heard these
things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and
said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the
uttermost of your matter. 23 And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul,
and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his
acquaintance to minister or come unto him.

1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it
upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath
anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? 2 When thou art
departed from me today, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's
sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto
thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy
father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying,
What shall I do for my son? 3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence,
and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee
three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and
another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of
wine: 4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread;
which thou shalt receive of their hands. 5 After that thou shalt come to
the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall
come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt
meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a
psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they
shall prophesy: 6 And the spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and
thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. 7
And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as
occasion serve thee; for God is with thee. 8 And thou shalt go down
before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer
burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven
days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou
shalt do. 9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from
Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass
that day. 10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company
of prophets met him; and the spirit of God came upon him, and he
prophesied among them. 11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the
people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat
bread in the kingdom of God. 16 Then said he unto him, A certain man
made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper
time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now
ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first
said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and
see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought
five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the
master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into
the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the
maimed, and the halt, and the blind. 22 And the servant said, Lord, it
is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. 23 And the lord
said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel
them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say unto you,
That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

Lesson Daniel 5:10-16
10 Now the queen, by reason of the words of the
king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and
said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let
thy countenance be changed: 11 There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is
the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and
understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him;
whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father,
made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;
12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding,
interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of
doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar:
now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation. 13 Then
was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto
Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity
of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry? 14 I have even
heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light
and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee. 15 And now the
wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they
should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation
thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing: 16 And
I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve
doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the
interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a
chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the
kingdom.

Lesson Acts 24:24—25:12
24 And after certain days, when Felix came with
his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him
concerning the faith in Christ. 25 And as he reasoned of righteousness,
temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy
way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for
thee. 26 He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul,
that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and
communed with him. 27 But after two years Porcius Festus came into
Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul
bound.
1 Now when Festus was come into the province,
after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem. 2 Then the high
priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought
him, 3 And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to
Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him. 4 But Festus answered,
that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart
shortly thither. 5 Let them therefore, said he, which among you are
able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness
in him. 6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went
down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat
commanded Paul to be brought. 7 And when he was come, the Jews which
came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous
complaints against Paul, which they could not prove. 8 While he answered
for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the
temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all. 9 But
Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt
thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
10 Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to
be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.
11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death,
I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these
accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar. 12
Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou
appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.

Lesson I Samuel 10:17
17 And Samuel called the people together unto
the Lord to Mizpeh; 18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith
the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered
you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all
kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you: 19 And ye have this day
rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and
your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over
us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and
by your thousands. 20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of
Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken. 21 When he had
caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family
of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they
sought him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they inquired of the
Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered,
Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. 23 And they ran and fetched
him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any
of the people from his shoulders and upward. 24 And Samuel said to all
the people, See ye him whom the Lord hath chosen, that there is none
like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God
save the king. 25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom,
and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent
all the people away, every man to his house. 26 And Saul also went home
to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had
touched. 27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us?
And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his
peace.

Lesson Luke 14:25
25 And there went great multitudes with him: and
he turned, and said unto them, 26 If any man come to me, and hate not
his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and
sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And
whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my
disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not
down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish
it? 29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to
finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, 30 Saying, This man
began to build, and was not able to finish. 31 Or what king, going to
make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth
whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him
with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way
off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. 33 So
likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he
cannot be my disciple. 34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his
savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the
land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears
to hear, let him hear.

Lesson Daniel 5:17-30
17 Then Daniel answered and said before the
king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet
I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the
interpretation. 18 O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar
thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour: 19 And for the
majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled
and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept
alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down. 20
But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was
deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: 21 And
he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the
beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with
grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he
knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he
appointeth over it whomsoever he will. 22 And thou his son, O
Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have
brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords,
thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast
praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone,
which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath
is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: 24 Then was the
part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written. 25 And
this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 26
This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy
kingdom, and finished it. 27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances,
and art found wanting. 28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to
the Medes and Persians. 29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed
Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a
proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the
kingdom. 30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans
slain.

Lesson Acts 25:13
13 And after certain days king Agrippa and
Bernice came unto Caesarea to salute Festus. 14 And when they had been
there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying,
There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix: 15 About whom, when I was
at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me,
desiring to have judgment against him. 16 To whom I answered, It is not
the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which
is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer
for himself concerning the crime laid against him. 17 Therefore, when
they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the
judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth. 18 Against
whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such
things as I supposed: 19 But had certain questions against him of their
own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed
to be alive. 20 And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I
asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these
matters. 21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing
of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.
22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To
morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him. 23 And on the morrow, when Agrippa
was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place
of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at
Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth. 24 And Festus said, King
Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man,
about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at
Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and
that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send
him. 26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore
I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king
Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write. 27
For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to
signify the crimes laid against him.
