Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity Morning
Prayer Sunday
1st Lesson Proverbs 2:1-9
1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments
with thee; 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine
heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and
liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver,
and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand
the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord
giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7 He
layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that
walk uprightly. 8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the
way of his saints. 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and
judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

Lesson 1 Timothy 3:14. 4:16
14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to
come unto thee shortly: 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know
how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the
church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And
without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest
in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the
Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the
latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing
spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having
their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and
commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received
with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4 For every
creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received
with thanksgiving: 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be
a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and
of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. 7 But refuse profane and
old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. 8 For
bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all
things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to
come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. 10 For
therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the
living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that
believe. 11 These things command and teach. 12 Let no man despise thy
youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in
conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I
come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy,
with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 15 Meditate upon
these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear
to all. 16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in
them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear
thee.

Lesson Amos 8:4-12
4 Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy,
even to make the poor of the land to fail, 5 Saying, When will the new
moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set
forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and
falsifying the balances by deceit? 6 That we may buy the poor for
silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of
the wheat? 7 The Lord hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I
will never forget any of their works. 8 Shall not the land tremble for
this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up
wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood
of Egypt. 9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God,
that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the
earth in the clear day: 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning,
and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon
all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the
mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day. 11 Behold,
the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the
land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the
words of the Lord: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from
the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word
of the Lord, and shall not find it.

Lesson John 7:37
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast,
Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me,
and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out
of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of
the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy
Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) 40
Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a
truth this is the Prophet. 41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some
said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Hath not the scripture said,
That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of
Bethlehem, where David was? 43 So there was a division among the people
because of him. 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man
laid hands on him. 45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and
Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46 The
officers answered, Never man spake like this man. 47 Then answered them
the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or of the
Pharisees believed on him? 49 But this people who knoweth not the law
are cursed. 50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by
night, being one of them,) 51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear
him, and know what he doeth? 52 They answered and said unto him, Art
thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no
prophet. 53 And every man went unto his own house.

Lesson Exodus 14:5-14, 19-21, 24-28,

5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the
people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned
against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have
let Israel go from serving us? 6 And he made ready his chariot, and took
his people with him: 7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all
the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them. 8 And the
Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after
the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high
hand. 9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and
chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them
encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon. 10 And when
Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and,
behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and
the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord. 11 And they said unto
Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to
die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry
us forth out of Egypt? 12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in
Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had
been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in
the wilderness. 13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand
still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you
today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them
again no more for ever. 14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall
hold your peace.
19 And the angel of God, which went before the
camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the
cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: 20 And it came
between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a
cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that
the one came not near the other all the night. 21 And Moses stretched
out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a
strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the
waters were divided.
24 And it came to pass, that in the morning
watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar
of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, 25 And
took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the
Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord
fighteth for them against the Egyptians. 26 And the Lord said unto
Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come
again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.
27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned
to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled
against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the
sea. 28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the
horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them;
there remained not so much as one of them.
30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of
the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the
sea shore.

Lesson Hebrews 11:23-29, 32-40
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid
three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and
they were not afraid of the king's commandment. 24 By faith Moses, when
he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's
daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of
God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the
reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he
had respect unto the recompence of the reward. 27 By faith he forsook
Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him
who is invisible. 28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the
sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch
them. 29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which
the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.
32 And what shall I more say? for the time would
fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae;
of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: 33 Who through faith
subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the
mouths of lions, 34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of
the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight,
turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their dead
raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting
deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: 36 And others
had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and
imprisonment: 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted,
were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and
goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; 38 (Of whom the world
was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens
and caves of the earth. 39 And these all, having obtained a good report
through faith, received not the promise: 40 God having provided some
better thing for us, that they without us should not be made
perfect.

Lesson Deuteronomy 11:18-21, 26-28, 32
18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in
your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand,
that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 And ye shall teach
them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house,
and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou
risest up. 20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine
house, and upon thy gates: 21 That your days may be multiplied, and the
days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your
fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing
and a curse; 27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your
God, which I command you this day: 28 And a curse, if ye will not obey
the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way
which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not
known.
32 And ye shall observe to do all the statutes
and judgments which I set before you this day.

Lesson Galatians 1:1-12
1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man,
but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)
2 And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:
3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus
Christ, 4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from
this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: 5
To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 6 I marvel that ye are so soon
removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another
gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and
would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from
heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have
preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I
now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have
received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or
do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the
servant of Christ. 11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which
was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of
man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Lesson Deuteronomy 5:1-21
1 And Moses called all Israel, and said unto
them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your
ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them. 2 The Lord
our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 The Lord made not this
covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here
alive this day. 4 The Lord talked with you face to face in the mount out
of the midst of the fire, 5 (I stood between the Lord and you at that
time, to shew you the word of the Lord: for ye were afraid by reason of
the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying, 6 I am the Lord thy
God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage. 7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me. 8 Thou shalt not
make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in
heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters
beneath the earth: 9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor
serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the
iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth
generation of them that hate me, 10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of
them that love me and keep my commandments. 11 Thou shalt not take the
name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him
guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 12 Keep the sabbath day to
sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. 13 Six days thou
shalt labour, and do all thy work: 14 But the seventh day is the sabbath
of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy
son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor
thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is
within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as
well as thou. 15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of
Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a
mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God
commanded thee to keep the sabbath day. 16 Honour thy father and thy
mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be
prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord
thy God giveth thee. 17 Thou shalt not kill. 18 Neither shalt thou
commit adultery. 19 Neither shalt thou steal. 20 Neither shalt thou bear
false witness against thy neighbour. 21 Neither shalt thou desire thy
neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his
field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any
thing that is thy neighbour's.

Lesson Matthew 22:34
34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had
put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. 35 Then one
of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and
saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus
said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great
commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and
the prophets. 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked
them, 42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto
him, The Son of David. 43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in
spirit call him Lord, saying, 44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on
my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45 If David then
call him Lord, how is he his son? 46 And no man was able to answer him a
word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more
questions.

Lesson 1 Kings 19
1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had
done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2
Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to
me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by
tomorrow about this time. 3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for
his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his
servant there. 4 But he himself went a day's journey into the
wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested
for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take
away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 5 And as he lay and
slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said
unto him, Arise and eat. 6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake
baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and
drink, and laid him down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again
the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the
journey is too great for thee. 8 And he arose, and did eat and drink,
and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto
Horeb the mount of God. 9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged
there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto
him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10 And he said, I have been very
jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets
with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to
take it away. 11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before
the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind
rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but
the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the
Lord was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but
the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13
And it was so, when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his face in his
mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And,
behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here,
Elijah? 14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of
hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown
down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I
only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 15 And the Lord
said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and
when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: 16 And Jehu the
son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the
son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy
room. 17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of
Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu
shall Elisha slay. 18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all
the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not
kissed him. 19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of
Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he
with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon
him. 20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I
pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee.
And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee? 21
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them,
and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto
the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and
ministered unto him.

Lesson Acts 13:17-19, 27-39
7 And when we had finished our course from Tyre,
we came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one
day. 8 And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and
came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the
evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. 9 And the
same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. 10 And as we
tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet,
named Agabus. 11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle,
and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost,
So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and
shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. 12 And when we heard
these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up
to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break
mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at
Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. 14 And when he would not be
persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done. 15 And after
those days we took up our carriages, and went up to Jerusalem. 16 There
went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with
them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.
17 And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly.
18 And the day following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the
elders were present. 19 And when he had saluted them, he declared
particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his
ministry.
27 And when the seven days were almost ended,
the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up
all the people, and laid hands on him, 28 Crying out, Men of Israel,
help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the
people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also
into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place. 29 (For they had
seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they
supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.) 30 And all the city was
moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out
of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut. 31 And as they went
about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that
all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 Who immediately took soldiers and
centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain
and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul. 33 Then the chief captain
came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains;
and demanded who he was, and what he had done. 34 And some cried one
thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the
certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the
castle. 35 And when he came upon the stairs, so it was, that he was
borne of the soldiers for the violence of the people. 36 For the
multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him. 37 And as
Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May
I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek? 38 Art not thou
that Egyptian, which before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out
into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers? 39 But Paul
said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen
of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the
people.

Lesson I Kings 18:1-15
1 And it came to pass after many days, that the
word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew
thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. 2 And Elijah
went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.
3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now
Obadiah feared the Lord greatly: 4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off
the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid
them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab
said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and
unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and
mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts. 6 So they divided the land
between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and
Obadiah went another way by himself. 7 And as Obadiah was in the way,
behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said,
Art thou that my lord Elijah? 8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy
lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 9 And he said, What have I sinned, that
thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? 10
As the Lord thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my
lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he
took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 11 And
now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 12 And it
shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the spirit of
the Lord shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and
tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant
fear the Lord from my youth. 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when
Jezebel slew the prophets of the Lord, how I hid an hundred men of the
Lord's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and
he shall slay me. 15 And Elijah said, As the Lord of hosts liveth,
before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him today.

Lesson James 1:12-21
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation:
for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord
hath promised to them that love him. 13 Let no man say when he is
tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil,
neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is
drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath
conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth
forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and
every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of
lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of
his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a
kind of firstfruits of his creatures. 19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren,
let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the
wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore lay
apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with
meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

the deceived and the deceiver are his. 17 He leadeth counsellors away
spoiled, and maketh the judges fools. 18 He looseth the bond of kings,
and girdeth their loins with a girdle. 19 He leadeth princes away
spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty. 20 He removeth away the speech of
the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged. 21 He poureth
contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty. 22 He
discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the
shadow of death.

Lesson Matthew 13:53. 14:12
53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had
finished these parables, he departed thence. 54 And when he was come
into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that
they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and
these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his
mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and
Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath
this man all these things? 57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus
said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own
country, and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there
because of their unbelief.
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the
fame of Jesus, 2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist;
he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth
themselves in him. 3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and
put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. 4 For
John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. 5 And when he
would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they
counted him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod's birthday was kept, the
daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. 7 Whereupon
he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. 8 And
she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John
Baptist's head in a charger. 9 And the king was sorry: nevertheless for
the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to
be given her. 10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. 11 And
his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she
brought it to her mother. 12 And his disciples came, and took up the
body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Lesson I Kings 18:16-24
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him:
and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw
Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? 18
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's
house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou
hast followed Baalim. 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel
unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and
the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.
20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the
prophets together unto mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came unto all the
people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be
God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered
him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only,
remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and
fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them
choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on
wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay
it on wood, and put no fire under: 24 And call ye on the name of your
gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that
answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said,
It is well spoken.

Lesson James 1:22
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers
only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word,
and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a
glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway
forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the
perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful
hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his
tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. 27
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit
the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself
unspotted from the world.

Lesson Job 14:1-14
1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days,
and full of trouble. 2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down:
he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. 3 And dost thou open
thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? 4
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one. 5 Seeing his
days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast
appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; 6 Turn from him, that he may
rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day. 7 For there is
hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that
the tender branch thereof will not cease. 8 Though the root thereof wax
old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; 9 Yet through
the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant. 10
But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where
is he? 11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and
drieth up: 12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no
more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. 13 O that
thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret,
until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and
remember me! 14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my
appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

Lesson Matthew 14:13-21
13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by
ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof,
they followed him on foot out of the cities. 14 And Jesus went forth,
and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them,
and he healed their sick. 15 And when it was evening, his disciples came
to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send
the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy
themselves victuals. 16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart;
give ye them to eat. 17 And they say unto him, We have here but five
loaves, and two fishes. 18 He said, Bring them hither to me. 19 And he
commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five
loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and
brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the
multitude. 20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of
the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. 21 And they that had
eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

Lesson I Kings 18:25-30
25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal,
Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are
many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. 26 And
they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and
called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal,
hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped
upon the altar which was made. 27 And it came to pass at noon, that
Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is
talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he
sleepeth, and must be awaked. 28 And they cried aloud, and cut
themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood
gushed out upon them. 29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and
they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice,
that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the
people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that
was broken down.
36 And it came to pass at the time of the
offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near,
and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known
this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and
that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear
me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou
hast turned their heart back again. 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell,
and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the
dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all
the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he
is the God; the Lord, he is the God. 40 And Elijah said unto them, Take
the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them:
and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a
sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And
Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the
earth, and put his face between his knees, 43 And said to his servant,
Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said,
There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44 And it came to
pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little
cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto
Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee
not. 45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black
with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and
went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he
girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Lesson James 2:1-13
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there
come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and
there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3 And ye have respect to
him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a
good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my
footstool: 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become
judges of evil thoughts? 5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God
chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom
which he hath promised to them that love him? 6 But ye have despised the
poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment
seats? 7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are
called? 8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have
respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as
transgressors. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend
in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For he that said, Do not commit
adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if
thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak ye,
and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For he
shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy
rejoiceth against judgment.

his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him

14 His confidence shall be rooted out of his

dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be
scattered upon his habitation. 16 His roots shall be dried up beneath,
and above shall his branch be cut off. 17 His remembrance shall perish
from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. 18 He shall be
driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. 19 He
shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in

Lesson Matthew 14:22
22 And straightway Jesus constrained his
disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side,
while he sent the multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the
multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the
evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the
midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And
in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the
sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were
troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But
straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be
not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid
me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was
come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to
sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus
stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of
little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come
into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came
and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. 34 And
when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. 35 And
when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all
that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment:
and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had

Lesson James 2:14
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a
man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a
brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of
you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled;
notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the
body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is
dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have
works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my
faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest
well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O
vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our
father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the
altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was
faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,
Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and
he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man
is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the
harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had
sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is
dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Lesson Job 21:7-20, 29-33
7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea,
are mighty in power? 8 Their seed is established in their sight with
them, and their offspring before their eyes. 9 Their houses are safe
from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. 10 Their bull gendereth,
and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. 11 They
send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. 12
They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the
grave. 14 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not
the knowledge of thy ways. 15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve
him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? 16 Lo, their
good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me. 17
How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their
destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger. 18 They
are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth
away. 19 God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him,
and he shall know it. 20 His eyes shall see his destruction, and he
shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
29 Have ye not asked them that go by the way?
and do ye not know their tokens, 30 That the wicked is reserved to the
day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. 31
Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he
hath done? 32 Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in
the tomb. 33 The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every
man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

Lesson Matthew 15:1-20
1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees,
which were of Jerusalem, saying, 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the
tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat
bread. 3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress
the commandment of God by your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying,
Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let
him die the death. 5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or
his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have
ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. 7 Ye
hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people
draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips;
but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me,
teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 10 And he called the
multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which
goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the
mouth, this defileth a man. 12 Then came his disciples, and said unto
him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard
this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly
Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they be
blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall
fall into the ditch. 15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare
unto us this parable. 16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without
understanding? 17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in
at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the
heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil
thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness,
blasphemies: 20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with
unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Lesson I Kings 19:9

Lesson James 3
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that
we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we
offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man,
and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the
horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole
body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are
driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small
helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a
little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a
little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity:
so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and
setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7
For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things
in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue
can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men,
which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth
proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so
to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and
bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a
vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 13 Who
is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a
good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have
bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against
the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly,
sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is
confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is
first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of
mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And
the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Lesson Job 24:1-4, 12-20
1 Why, seeing times are not hidden from the
Almighty, do they that know him not see his days? 2 Some remove the
landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof. 3 They
drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a
pledge. 4 They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide
themselves together.
12 Men groan from out of the city, and the soul
of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them. 13 They are
of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof,
nor abide in the paths thereof. 14 The murderer rising with the light
killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. 15 The eye
also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see
me: and disguiseth his face. 16 In the dark they dig through houses,
which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the
light. 17 For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one
know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death. 18 He is
swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth
not the way of the vineyards. 19 Drought and heat consume the snow
waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned. 20 The womb shall
forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more
remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.

thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23 But

answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to
cast it to dogs. 27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the
crumbs which fall from their masters' table. 28 Then Jesus answered and
said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou
wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. 29 And Jesus
departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up
into a mountain, and sat down there. 30 And great multitudes came unto
him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and
many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: 31
Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak,
the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they
glorified the God of Israel. 32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto
him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue
with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send
them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. 33 And his disciples say
unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to
fill so great a multitude? 34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves
have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. 35 And he
commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. 36 And he took the
seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave
to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 37 And they did
all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was
left seven baskets full. 38 And they that did eat were four thousand
men, beside women and children. 39 And he sent away the multitude, and
took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

Lesson I Kings 21:1-10
1 And it came to pass after these things, that
Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the
palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying,
Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because
it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard
than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it
in money. 3 And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord forbid it me, that I
should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee. 4 And Ahab came
into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the
Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the
inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned
away his face, and would eat no bread. 5 But Jezebel his wife came to
him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no
bread? 6 And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the
Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else,
if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he
answered, I will not give thee my vineyard. 7 And Jezebel his wife said
unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat
bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite. 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed
them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the
nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth. 9 And she wrote in
the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the
people: 10 And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness
against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then
carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.

Lesson James 4:1-12
1 From whence come wars and fightings among you?
come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2 Ye
lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye
fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and
receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your
lusts. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship
of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of
the world is the enemy of God. 5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in
vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth
more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth
grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw
nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye
double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be
turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in
the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 11 Speak not evil one
of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth
his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou
judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 There is
one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that
judgest another?

Lesson Job 25:2-6; 26:6-14
2 Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh
peace in his high places. 3 Is there any number of his armies? and upon
whom doth not his light arise? 4 How then can man be justified with God?
or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? 5 Behold even to the
moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. 6
How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a
worm?
6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath
no covering. 7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and
hangeth the earth upon nothing. 8 He bindeth up the waters in his thick
clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. 9 He holdeth back the face
of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. 10 He hath compassed the
waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end. 11 The
pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. 12 He
divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth
through the proud. 13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his
hand hath formed the crooked serpent. 14 Lo, these are parts of his
ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his
power who can understand?

Lesson Matthew 16:1-12
1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came,
and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. 2
He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be
fair weather: for the sky is red. 3 And in the morning, It will be foul
weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can
discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the
times? 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and
there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.
And he left them, and departed. 5 And when his disciples were come to
the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said unto
them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the
Sadducees. 7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because
we have taken no bread. 8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them,
O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have
brought no bread? 9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five
loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10 Neither
the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you
concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees
and of the Sadducees? 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not
beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and
of the Sadducees.
